My boys gobble up quite a bit of fermented food. So here is a blog post dedicated to helping you create fermented foods your kids will love. Why eat fermented foods? Why make fermented foods your kids will love?
PROBIOTICS.
Yep. Those pricy bottles you buy in the refrigerated section at the health food store aren't where the probiotics actually come from. For centuries we consumed probiotics daily via fermented foods.
They help your digestive system. They improve immunity. They keep you regular. They make food taste yummy!
I'm going to make this a series of posts so I can share several recipes. Today, I'm going to begin with something crazy simple.
Fermented Carrots
You will need a quart mason jar, a couple garlic cloves, about 10 organic carrots, 1T kosher or pink Himalayan salt, spring or filtered water.
Cut your garlic cloves in half and place in the bottom of your jar. Wash and slice your carrots into carrot sticks. Place them in the jar making sure to clear the top of the jar and leave 1/2 an inch head room. Mix 1c of water and 1T of salt until dissolved. Pour into jar and top off with more water until you have filled it to within half an inch of the top.
Put your lid on the jar.
Make sure all carrots are below the water, otherwise they will mold.
Leave the jar to ferment on your counter 5 days. Place in the fridge and don't eat until refrigerated about 3 days.
These are salty but scrumptious. Your kids will gobble them up!
Wholly Mom,
